And I mean really test it – during peak hours, with other devices running. Aim for at least 5-10 Mbps upload speed for decent quality. If you are aiming for a professional-level stream, you will need even more.

Lesson #2: Backup, Backup, Backup!

I didn’t have a backup plan. Big mistake. Having a secondary internet connection (maybe a mobile hotspot?) can be a lifesaver. Likewise, have a backup streaming platform ready. I used OBS Studio, which is great, but consider alternatives like StreamYard.

Lesson #3: Pre-Race Prep is Crucial

My pre-race prep was pathetic. I didn't practice my commentary. My graphics were a mess. I underestimated how much time is needed for setup and testing. Start practicing weeks before the actual event. Plan your camera angles and any graphics you'll use. Create a script or at least an outline for your commentary. A run-through will save you from embarrassing flubs during the live stream.

Lesson #4: Promote, Promote, Promote!

Nobody knew I was even streaming. I didn't do enough promotion. My social media strategy was weak. I should have used relevant hashtags like #BarcelonaBrest, #sailingrace, #livesailing, and tagged the official race accounts.
